How wonderful to live in 2024 — where so many openly queer public figures have families we can look to for inspiration. If you’d like some resources for family building, check out the end of this post. In the meantime, here are a few of our favorite LGBTQ+ parents in the public eye for your family building inspiration!

Nate Berkus & Jeremiah Brent

These two hunky interior design gurus had two beautiful children via surrogacy. If you have two kids and your house looks that good, we’re paying attention! Want to make your house look as dreamy as theirs? Check out their books:

Cynthia Nixon & Christine Marinoni

The iconic actress and political voice has a beautiful blended family, with a new child joining two older siblings from a previous marriage.

Karamo Brown

Everyone’s favorite arm-chair psychologist Karamo has two sons, one biological and one adopted from a partner. Karamo is a testament to how family can keep changing and evolving as we do. He also has written a few children’s books that we adore. Check out our favorite:

Jodie Foster

Living Icon Jodie Foster has two sons with her ex, who she thanked at the Golden Globes in 2013 saying, “I am so proud of our modern family.”

Matt Bomer & Simon Halls

Matt and Simon are raising their three adorable sons in an intersectional way, saying, “Let them find their own way.”

Sara Gilbert & Linda Perry

While Sara and Linda are no longer together, they had two kids together and remain close. Another example of queer couples forging new ways of handling family life…even divorce!

Rosie O’Donnell

With five kids, Rosie is a modern day Momma Bear building her pack of cubs!

BD Wong

BD Wong has a gay son (bonus points!) who he co-parents with his ex-partner, Richie Jackson and Jackson’s partner Jordan Roth.

Wanda Sykes & Alex Sykes

These two have twins together, and seem like a real example of keeping the fun in the marriage alive! If only all of our parents could be as loving as these two are with each other.

Let this be your reminder — family can look all kinds of ways! The journey to building your family is never over. If you are planning on starting a family of your own, check out our resources for LGBTQ+ family building! From egg freezing, to donors, to surrogates, we’ve got all the tools you need to build your fam. They did it, and you can, too!
